This is a question that is often asked by men and women seeking an honest answer to God’s ability to use men who share in the universal brokenness of the human race. It is true that every man, no matter how devoted or consecrated, has lapses in his morale walk.
However, when asking this question two things are important to consider in order to keep our expectation in perspective.
Inspiration of the Holy Spirit
The Scripture informs us in 2 Peter 1:21, “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” Which simply stated means that God the Holy Spirit inspired the writing of holy and consecrated men who had moved beyond ulterior motives and self-will in their service to record the Lord’s words. Additionally, inspiration is not at a topical level but rather the level of the individual words. So when the Holy Spirit was inspiring the writers of the Bible, He would rifle through their vocabulary and select the exact word that communicates that which was needed. It is not so much that we trust flawed men as it is we trust the efforts of God the Holy Spirit to communicate with humanity.
Our Reasonable Expectations
Society sometimes holds unreasonable expectations of men and women who represent the Lord, be it a prophet, a pastor, or even the individual Christian believer. When someone has an operable brain tumor and requires complex brain surgery, society typically does not hold the physician to the same standard of expected perfection which they would require of the man or woman of God. When we go the 27th floor of a high-rise building, we never stop to consider if the architects and engineers were flawlessly perfect in their respective abilities. The fact that the elevator is certified and working is proof enough and we take it up floor by floor without hesitation.
We quickly realize that the many years of study and experience presents the Physician as the best case scenario for achieving help. Likewise, we should realize that the many years of biblical study and spiritual experience presents the man of God as the best case scenario for achieving spiritual understanding. Additionally, if the Lord could only speak to humanity or record His words though a perfect man, then Jesus Christ would have had to personally write the entire Old and New Testaments, because there has never existed even one perfect man other than Christ Himself. God uses flawed people to speak to a flawed humanity because there are no other options. Unlike the inspired Bible writers, when we trust the brain surgeon to operate on our brains, he operates without the benefit and assistance of God the Holy Spirit.
