What Does the Bible Say About Sex Before Marriage?

When this wonderful gift is taken outside of the intended marriage relationship it is stolen.  Sex is not intended to be outside of marriage for it potentially creates a human life which would end up outside of the family structure that God intended.

In a time when sexual activity outside the confines of marriage are so prevalent in global society, this is both an important and a timely question. It is also one that the majority of people will reject as being antiquated. The Bible teaches complete abstinence outside of marriage. The sexual relationship between a husband and his wife is the only form of sexual expression of which God approves. In fact, every other form of sexual expression is explicitly condemned in the Bible. The Bible is quite strong on the issue of sexual immorality. The punishment for adultery under the Old Covenant was death. The New Covenant also says much concerning sexual immorality, see: Acts 15:20; 1 Corinthians 5:1; 6:13, 18; 10:8; 2 Corinthians 12:21; Galatians 5:19; Ephesians 5:3; Colossians 3:5; 1 Thessalonians 4:3; Jude 7.

God Gave Man Sexual Expression
Hebrews 13:4 informs us, “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.” This is God’s approval of the marriage bed (marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled) and His explicit disapproval of all other forms of sexual expression (whoremongers and adulterers God will judge). Sex was given to mankind by God to be enjoyed within the marriage relationship. It was given as a form of pleasure and procreation. When this wonderful gift is taken outside of the intended marriage relationship it is stolen.  Sex is not intended to be outside of marriage for it potentially creates a human life which would end up outside of the family structure that God intended.

Societal Problems from Disobedience
In light of current social policy, God’s position may seem to some to be unreasonable. However, if we look at the social cost for societies’ liberal sexual policies, we quickly discover that many of the current social woes can be pegged back to a disobedience of God’s judgment concerning sex before marriage. If everyone obeyed God’s desire to limit sexual activity to the marriage relationship, some of the following societal issues would not exist, or if the existed it would be on a drastically reduced scale: one parent households, abortions, homosexual activities, mis-genders, femininity within males and masculinity with females, sexual promiscuity among teens.

The Bible teaches that sexual expression is given to men and women only within the confines of a God-ordained marriage. When it is taken outside of those parameters, it is considered sin.
